If you are reading this then chances are you have tangled with the two-headed beast and looking remedies for depression and anxiety before they do any further damage to your physical and mental health.

Like many people, this writer has struggled with depression and anxiety brought on by stress, which has subsequently caused knock-on effects such as insomnia, heart palpitations, and overall feelings of impending doom.

Yes, it’s difficult but until we start to understand the underlying causes it’s not going away anytime soon. In my case stress was the overwhelming pre-cursor to anxiety and depression. Let me shared my experience with you so you too can benefit from my long lonely battle that saw no support from family or friends. This is very much a story of self-help and if I can do it, then I promise anyone can come through this.

Causality Of Anxiety & Depression

The onset of these conditions can be missed simply by telling yourself that life is all about challenges and every challenge is just something that needs to be conquered, after all, no pain, no gain, right? Well, yes to a large extent this is very true, the idea of overcoming challenges is healthy because it brings with it feelings of pride and satisfaction when obstacles are overcome and success is delivered in whatever form you are chasing. It could be getting your dream job, buying your dream car, starting a family, anything that is a focal point in your life.

The problems start when the stress to succeed becomes dis-stress. When the need to nail that promotion, pay off the debt, repair the car, or just keep the job in these trying times. It all mounts up until one day everything seems to be against you.

So, now you are stressed out what do you do? More often than not, the onset of stress triggers thoughts and feelings of hopelessness and constant worry about things that may not be within our control. It’s no great shock to see this subsequently leads to feelings of anxiety and subsequently depression.

In my personal experience, it was the overwhelming pressure to complete a heavy workload that I had set for myself in preparation for massive political changes in Europe. My position as a blogger and full-time frontier worker between Spain and Gibraltar means the pending Brexit will have a devastating effect on my citizenship, meaning traveling between countries for work may become impossible. That means I need to transition from my paid work to self-employed as soon as possible. That in turn opened up many issues with self-employment in Spain with all the red tape. The list of worries goes on and on, but I won’t bore you with them. Suffice to say, my predisposition for depression has been brought to the front by stress or distress and anxiety, leaving me emotionally, and physically exhausted and fearful for the future.

Anxiety and depression can lead to serious situations and real physical illness. It’s not just that suffers have irrational thoughts causing real feelings of fear and hopelessness. It’s not just a case of pulling yourself together, there are underlying causes that are ingrained deep into the psyche that require real solutions.

The physical issues that can arise from long term anxiety and depression are insomnia, heart palpitation, high blood pressure leading to cardiovascular illness if not tackled in a timely fashion. The physical conditions can also be aggravated by common lifestyle choices such as drinking or substance abuse.

The symptoms of anxiety and depression are broad in range and powerful in nature. Anyone suffering from these symptoms knows only too well how debilitating they are, from constant irrational fear and worry, rapid heartbeat, fatigue, headaches, hot flashes, sweating, abdominal pain, and difficulty breathing.

It doesn’t stop there. An inability to relax and insomnia means being constantly tired and grumpy with feelings of sadness or worthlessness. Panic attacks and problems with decision making, memory, and concentration issues are common, so too are eating disorders such as over and under-eating.

The good news is there are ways to treat these egregious conditions, let’s take a look at some of them and let me give you a pointer about which path I took.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT)

Using relaxation techniques can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders to make huge improvements in quality of life. This can be done using tools such as practicing meditation, mindfulness, and hypnosis.

Medications

Often used in conjunction with CBT there are medications that can be prescribed to help treat both anxiety and depression. Modern antidepressants have fewer side effects now and SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors are becoming popular, but you need to speak to your health care provider and discuss your symptoms in depth before moving forward with this approach.

Mental health is not something to hide or be embarrassed about, it’s something that should be considered as important as treating a broken bone. Gone are the days when we had to suffer in silence like we are the main lead in a John Wayne movie. There is no benefit from being stoic when it comes to stress, anxiety, and depression, it’s not something that will go away without intervention.  With the resources we have at hand from medical intervention to Hypnosis there is something for everyone, and I have outlined my personal journey hoping it has inspired you to take the first step to a long, healthy, happy life.
